Schlagerparty at “Der Biergarten”

You might want to listen to this while reading… or this…or maybe this.

Der Biergarten, opened its doors for hungry Germans (and beer-or-German-food-hungry Americans) just about a year ago. Mostly decorated in the style of a traditional Bavarian Biergarten, it is currently the only restaurant of its kind in Atlanta.

With its large German population, The German Culture Center, and the German Consulate; Der Biergarten gained popularity in Atlanta quickly. If you haven’t been and live in the Atlanta area, it’s definitely worth a try!

A large variety of German beers and wines as well as traditional German food make this establishment popular with Germans, Germany loving Americans, as well as food, wine, and beer lovers in general.

Der Biergarten has hosted a number of events over the last year and done a lot to attract an even larger part of the Atlanta population.

From German Christmas Celebrations, over a Stein Club Launch Party, to Dog Day Fun; Der Biergarten is sure to become an Atlanta staple.

The most recent and probably also one of the most popular events to date was Saturday’s Schlagerparty at Der Biergarten.

German Schlager is a type of pop music with a catchy melody and rather simple lyrics. More generally the word “Schlager” also refers to a hit song. Schlager songs appeal to people because of their uncomplicated musical structure and easy-to-pick-up lyrics. Marianne Rosenberg’s “Er gehört zu mir” would be an example of a very popular Schlager song from the 70′s. Although the Schlager’s origins are to be found in the middle ages, this type of music gained its popularity when sound was introduced to film. Many Schlager songs are as much a part of German culture as beer and Mercedes Benz are. Especially Marlene Dietrich’s “Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuss auf Liebe eingestellt,” has been continuously popular over the past 80 years. It has also been  performed by numerous artists including Madonna, Doris Day, Sammy Davis Jr, Billy Holiday, and even The Beatles. In 1997 the original version was included in a Mercedes Benz commercial, which was rated as the number three top car commercial of all time.

Although Schlager Music reached the peak of its popularity in the 1970′s with the Soccer World Cup of 1974, the Olympic Games in Munich, and the ZDF Hitparade (a popular German music show); the retro movement in the 90′s led to a sudden increase of new schlager songs and a revival of thought-to-be-outdated ones. This is just one of the songs that became very popular in the 90′s.

Needless to say, Schlager songs are widely known in Germany and hugely popular to this day.

The Schlagerparty at Der Biergarten, therefore, was sure to be a success. German flags; German beer, wine and food; German Schlager music to sing along and dance to; German themed decoration, Traditional German outfits (Dirndl and Lederhosen); 70′s inspired clothing, very attentive staff as well as the traditional Biergarten bench seating all contributed to a very successful evening.
